Earth Mother and Circles of Life

An Exhibition of Contemporary Marian Art by Dede McKay

Dede McKay lives in Spokane, Washington, where she and her husband, Bob, operate the Spokane Room bed and breakfast. They owned and operated the Bramante Gallery, Walla Walla, Washington, from 1980 to 1983 and Stahlrose Gallery, Lincoln City, Oregon, from 1983 to 1986. Mrs. McKay has exhibited her art in Washington and Oregon. Among the galleries at which she has participated in juried shows are the Nica Gallery, Pullman, Washington (1991); Lincoln Art Gallery, Lincoln City, Oregon (1989); and Carnegie Center of the Arts, Walla Walla, Washington (1988). In 1991, her work appeared in the Northwest Artists & Poets Calendar.

Artist's Statement

"My research in creating this exhibit has opened up a whole new world for me, in the caring, creative mother image of the Madonna, which is surprisingly in all nationalities. I was intrigued by the fact that the Hopi Indians of Arizona and the Tibetans of southeast Asia have similar prophecies.

A Star Is Born

"When I look at the world today (its families and the mother image), the caring mother is essential to society's survival, and a beautiful symbol. I am intrigued by all the different cultures that color our world. "I am somewhat of an environmentalist, and feel we have a tendency to take this beautiful earth we are privileged to walk upon for granted; this became my inspiration for the caring earth mother in my paintings.

"As far as the arts go, I feel that it is 'deep within' and genetic. I have seven children, five of whom are artists; Kay O'Rourke and Gina Freuen exhibit nationally. "Working and owning two galleries left little time for the 'me' within. We have just moved to the Spokane area to be closer to family and I am now permanently encased in my studio."
