Artist's Statement "I have often marveled at the willingness of the Virgin Mary to accept the role the angel presented to her, knowing the dire social consequences and the possibility that her betrothed might very well reject her. Yet she consented readily and, on hearing the news of her cousin Elizabeth's pregnancy, made ready to go and visit her. "And what a joyful
greeting from Elizabeth - 'Blessed is the fruit of thy womb!' eliciting
the most wonderful canticle recited by Mary - the
"I feel this meeting with Elizabeth was uplifting and reassuring for Mary who may, until when, have been assailed with doubts and fears. "I wanted to sculpt the Blessed Virgin at this very special time in her life. I think Mary's acceptance of the role of motherhood under trying circumstances should serve as encouragement to those young women who find themselves pregnant, to proceed to term with their babies and not to abort them."
