Exhibit showing - November through February 26, 1999
Artist's Statement "My preoccupation as an artist for the past eighteen years has been the intersection between sacred and profane space. In 1984, when I was cleaning a thrift shop iron, I recognized the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on its face. In order to confirm this miraculous image I embellished the iron. "This event led to my translation of a series of household discards and, later, rubbish into sacral artifacts. The heating element of the iron assists in the emergence of The gothic shape of the iron showed me the way into the experience of devotional art. The image of The Sacred Heart of Mary inside an iron sits inside a deconstructed travel iron (itself a metaphor for meditation). The over-the-top encrustation of the earlier piece gives way to simplified delicate ornamentation, using the reflective chrome to create holy space. "I am honored to be selected for the exhibit Mary in the Arts. The body of work represented by these two pieces is relatively small (about two dozen works completed over a period of seven years) yet is a significant part of my artistic and spiritual growth."
