Since graduating from the Paier College of Art in 1974, Ruth Sanderson has illustrated more than seventy-five books for children. The Nativity was first published by Little, Brown and Co. in 1992 and was just reprinted by Eerdmans Publishing in 2010. Her artistic inspiration for the styple of paintings for this book was a combination of iconography, Renaissance paintings, and illuminated manuscripts.
Ruth has also written and illustrated two picture books on the lives of the saints - SAINTS, Lives, and Illuminations, and MORE SAINTS, Lives and Illuminations, both published by Eerdmans. She is well known for her fairy tale picture books, including The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Papa Gatto, Cinderella, and Snow Princess. The Enchanted Wood, an original fairy tale, received both the Irma S. Black Award for best picture book of 1992, and the Young Hoosier Award in 1995.Her retelling of The Golden Mare, the Firebird and the Magic Ring won the Texas Bluebonnet Award for 2003. Her latest fairy tale is a version of Goldilocks.
Ruth's paintings have been included in exhibitions around the country, including The Norman Rockwell Museum, The Society of Illustrators, The Original Art, The Delaware Museum of Art, The Art Museum of Western Virgina, and The Worlds and Pictures Museum. Next year (Nov. 2011), The Norman Rockwell Museum will mount a three-month solo show of all her original oil paintings for The Twelve Dancing Princesses.
Ruth is a member of The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and The Western Mass Illustrator's Guild. Each year, she speaks at a number of conferences and schools, and she teaches courses in writing and illustrating picture books at a summer MFA graduate course in children's literature at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virgina.
