9. Madonna and Child #1

This mixed media piece is based on historically traditional icons of the Madonna and Christ Child,
translating the image in a contemporary medium. Because the format is so closely cropped there is a
visual intimacy portraying the relationship between mother and child, while recalling the tenderness
of maternal love that is selfless and unconditional. To create this stunning beaded piece Nancy Goes has
painted the image on cloth, embroidered over it with beads, and attached it to a wood backing which
has been gold leafed.
