Introduction to Mariology

Designed for students who are new to the program or who simply have an interest in Mariology, this course explores the basic Marian issues within the framework of contemporary theology and emphasizes the major developments in Mariology since Vatican II.

Methods in Theology

This course deals with various methods used in the study of contemporary theology. It points out their specific focus and philosophical foundation, as well as advantages and limitations. Their application to research in Mariology will be examined.

Research and Bibliography

This course introduces students to the resources and bibliography for theological studies, with attention to research in Mariology. It offers suggestions for organization and information management.

Mary and the Old Testament

This course studies the principal Old Testament texts with reference to history of salvation. A special emphasis will be given to the Protoevangelium, symbols and types such as New Eve, Hannah, Daughter of Zion, Ark of the Covenant, etc. The course will further show how some of these symbols and figures impacted on the New Testament and the apocryphal literature.

Ecclesiology

While giving special attention to the writings of major theologians regarding their understanding of the Church, this course also studies recent developments in African, Asian, Latin American and North Atlantic ecclesiologies. It will discuss the relationship between the Church as mystery and historical reality.

Mary in the Media

This course attempts to assess Mary's place in the electronic media. News reports and web sites with Marian themes from around the world will be shown and critiqued in light of Catholic teaching on the mass media.

Mary in the Medieval Period, Part I

This course studies the development of Marian doctrine and devotion in the Western Church from the seventh century to the Renaissance. It will attempt to situate Marian Studies of the Middle Ages within the context of religious mentalities and culture.

The historical background and development of Mary's place in catechesis from Vatican II till today is the focus of this course. Emphasis is placed on school and parish religion programs.

Mary and the Church

Not the least of Vatican II's merits was to point out Mary's place at the heart of the Church. In reassessing the Mary–Church relationship, the Council retrieved a Patristic theme of great importance. This course attempts to explore the Mary–Church theme from both a historical and a doctrinal point of view. It will also highlight some pastoral aspects.

Mary and the Church in the Patristic Period

This course explores the relation between Mary and the Church in the teaching of the Fathers. It will focus on the most ancient roots of the Mary–Church parallelism and the first attempts to elaborate Marian doctrine (Irenaeus). It will also examine the relation between Mary and the Church in the ancient African tradition (Tertulian, Cyprian), in the Alexandrian school (Clement of Alexandria), and in the Latin tradition (Ambrose, Augustine).

The Holy Spirit and Mary in the Patristic Period

This course contemplates Mary in the mystery of the Holy Spirit as pondered by some of the Fathers. It pays special attention to the role of the Holy Spirit at the Incarnation and for Mary's virginity.

Mary in Interreligious Dialogue

Interreligious dialogue represents a new dimension in ecumenism. This course examines Mary's affinities with various non-Christian traditions.
