Introduction to Mariology

Designed for students who are new to the program or who simply have an interest in Mariology, this course explores the basic Marian issues within the framework of contemporary theology and emphasizes the major developments in Mariology since Vatican II.

Methods in Theology

This course deals with various methods used in the study of contemporary theology. It points out their specific focus and philosophical foundation, as well as advantages and limitations. Their application to research in Mariology will be examined.

Research and Bibliography

This course introduces students to the resources and bibliography for theological studies, with attention to research in Mariology. It offers suggestions for organization and information management.

Mary and Symbolic Theology

The relation between Mary and the Church is frequently expressed in symbolic language. This course studies the meaning, advantages and limitations of symbolic discourse when speaking about Mary, in particular in her relation to the Church.

Mary’s Place in Contemporary Catechetics

The historical background and development of Mary's place in catechesis from Vatican II till today is the focus of this course. Emphasis is placed on school and parish religion programs.

Mary in the Media
Mr. Michael P. Duricy

This course attempts to assess Mary's place in the electronic media. News reports and web sites with Marian themes from around the world will be shown and critiqued in light of Catholic teaching on the mass media.

Mary in Interreligious Dialogue

Interreligious dialogue represents a new dimension in ecumenism. This course examines Mary's affinities with various non-Christian traditions.

Mary and the New Testament

This course studies the principal New Testament texts with reference to Mary as Mother of the Redeemer, as figure of the Church, and with reference to her role in the history of salvation.

Mary and the Old Testament
Father François Rossier, S.M.

This course studies the principal Old Testament texts with reference to Mary and the history of salvation. A special emphasis will be given to the Protoevangelium, symbols and types such as New Eve, Hannah, Daughter of Zion, Ark of the Covenant, etc. The course will further show how some of these symbols and figures impacted on the New Testament and the apocryphal literature.

All classes are held in RL 603 unless otherwise specified.
