Designed for students who are new to the program or who simply have an interest in Mariology, this course explores the basic Marian issues within the framework of contemporary theology and emphasizes the major developments in Mariology since Vatican II.

Methods in Theology

This course deals with various methods used in the study of contemporary theology. It points out their specific focus and philosophical foundation, as well as advantages and limitations. Their application to research in Mariology will be examined.

Mary and the Apocrypha

By studying the principal sources and texts of the non-canonical writings, this course will concentrate on the relationship of Mary to the Apocryphal Scriptures. It will prepare students to study Marian symbols and topics in devotion, religious culture and art.

Mary in the Liturgy

This course studies the importance and significance of the place of Mary in the liturgy, her presence in the mysteries of Christ celebrated throughout the liturgical year, principal Marian feasts, and doctrinal synthesis.

The Nativity Tradition

Nativity sets are interesting expressions of popular religious culture. This course situates the crèche historically and geographically, and explores the religious and cultural significance of its various aspects.

Mary and Asian Christian Spirituality

Asian religions and philosophies have had great impact on Christianity. This course attempts to situate Mary's place and role in a fruitful exchange between Asian religions and the Christian message.

Mary in the Contemporary Period (1900-1960)

There is a certain tendency of looking at contemporary Mariology only from the point of view of Vatican II and the post-conciliar period. Lumen Gentium is deeply rooted in Marian studies preceding the conciliar text. This course studies some of the names, tendencies and topics in Mariology of the first half of the 20th century.

Mary in the Contemporary Period (1960-Present)

Studying the teachings of Vatican II about Mary and subsequent magisterial developments, this course also explores important names, events and trends in Marian studies during the second half of the twentieth century, and into the twenty-first century.
