Marcel Carbonel

Santons of Provence come in various sizes.  This set represents a miniature edition of the Provençal village and of some of its famous characters.  There is one figure which begs for special attention.  His name is “le ravi,” usually translated with “man in rapture.”  He stands in a remote but prominent area of the nativity village.  His hands and arms are raised to heaven to express ravissement, meaning rapture.  A farm hand, the young man is somewhat simple-minded.  He is the only inhabitant of the whole village to manifest openly his guileless happiness on hearing the news of Christ’s birth.
