![]() Guatemala has more people than any other Central American country, where most live in the rugged mountains in the center part of the country. Guatemala City, the capital is the industrial center and is also the largest city in Central America. Almost half of the people are Indians, and their ancestors are the Maya Indians, which was a highly developed civilization hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus landed in America. The other Guatemalans are called Ladinos and are of mixed Indian and Spanish ancestry. Guatemala has three main land regions: the Northern Plains, the Highlands, and the Pacific Lowland. Most Guatemalans live in the Highlands, and mostly grow coffee and corn. The Pacific Lowland consist mostly of farmlands while the Northern Plains consist of tropical rain forests and is thinly populated. Guatemala is bordered by Mexico to the north, Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Honduras, El Salvador and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Guatemala began printing stamps around 1871 and it wasn't until 1968 that we find printing of Marian stamps. The World Book Encyclopedia, World Book, Inc., Chicago, 2000, pg. 412-414. |
