UNITED STATES

United States borders Canada, and Mexico, with the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast, and the Pacific Ocean on the west coast.  There are 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii.  The language in the United States of America is English, and Spanish is the second most spoken language.  The United States has one of the world's most varied populations in terms of ancestry.  The population includes descendents from every part of the world.  The first people to live in the United States were the American 'Indians'. Most Americans can trace their ancestry to Europe,  Latin  America, Africa, and Asia.  The United States began printing its stamps in 1846; stamps of Mary were not begun until 1966.

The 2002 Christmas Stamp

Jan Gossaert, called Mabuse, ~1478-1533/36, was born in Maubeuge, and lived most of his life in Belgium.  He spent the early years of his career in Antwerp, Bruges, Middleburg and Utrecht.  He then painted 15 years in the service of Philip of Burgundy (1509-1524), and after 1524 served his (grand) nephew Adolph of Burgundy until his death, 1533/36 in Middleburg.

Gossaert was eager to adopt the German and Italian styles of his time.  He was influenced in particular by A Dürer's rendering of the human body and by da Vinci's (School of Milan) handling of light and shadow.  Gossaert initiated a new period of fame in Dutch painting traditions, especially by introducing elements of Renaissance art and by expanding motifs and subject matters.

Gossaert departs from the typically intimist style of the master hands of his time and sets his figures in landscapes and surrounds them with the symmetrical sobriety of Renaissance architecture.  Madonnas, through finely chiseled features, reflect the Latin temperament with its zest for life, vitality and moderate sensuousness.  The solemn depictions of the baby Jesus, as we find them in van Eyck's and Memling's work, give way to sturdy and Herculean figures, little linebackers in the arms of a robust Madonna.  This is particularly obvious for this years' USA Postal Christmas stamp entitled Virgin and Child, (ca. 1520), and located at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Here are some of Gossaert's Marian paintings:

  • Malvagna - Tryptich (Palaermo 1510/11)
  • Adoration of the Magi (London 1512)
  • Luke Painting the Madonna (Prague ?)
  • Luke Painting the Madonna (Vienna 1525)
