Following the catechesis of today's
general audience, held at 10:30 a.m., in the courtyard of the Apostolic
Palace at Castelgandolfo, Pope John Paul greeted the pilgrims present in
Hungarian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Lithuanian and Polish.
"I cordially welcome the Slovak pilgrims," the Holy Father said,
"especially the members of the Slovensky Orol Organization who came to Rome
on bicycles. I thank you for this encounter, a sign of unity with the
Successor of Peter."
In greeting pilgrims from Sts. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Maribor,
Slovenia, the Pope said: "May your pilgrimage to the Apostolic See of St.
Peter strengthen and deepen faith, hope and charity. May our heavenly
mother, whom Slovenians so love and honor, bring your commitment as youth to
Christ."
"Today is the liturgical memory of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel,"
remarked John Paul II in Polish, "This memory is especially dear to all those who
are devoted to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Even I, from my youngest days, have worn
around my neck the scapular of Our Lady and I take refuge with trust under
the mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus. I hope the scapular
will be for everyone, especially the faithful who wear it, a help and
defense in times of danger, a seal of peace and a sign of Mary's care."

Film Festival to Mark Mother Teresa's Beatification
Will Open on Nov. 1 in Calcutta
CALCUTTA, India, JULY 16, 2003 (ZENIT.org) - Fides
An international film festival dedicated to Mother Teresa will be held here to
mark her forthcoming beatification.
No saint or blessed in the Church's history has been honored with an
international film festival, said the president of Signis India, Salesian Father
C.M. Paul.
"Mother Teresa, the 'saint of the gutters,' who captivated the world in
her blue-bordered white sari and her dogged zeal, deserves this feature and
documentary film festival," said Father Paul, the archdiocesan festival
coordinator. The beatification will be in Rome on Oct. 19.
The film festival opens Nov. 1, in anticipation of two days of celebrations
planned by the Diocese of Calcutta on Nov. 8 and 9.
Films to be shown include biographies on the life of Mother Teresa:
"Something Beautiful for God" (BBC, 1969) and "Mother Teresa, Her
Legacy," a film in two parts produced by Anne Petris; two other films:
"Mother Teresa and Her World" and "Mother Teresa First Love"
(1997); and "Total Surrender," a documentary produced by the
U.S.-based Eternal World Television Network.
One of the films chosen for the festival caused a stir when it was produced
in 1994. "Hell's Angel: Mother Teresa of Calcutta," produced by the
British private TV company Channel 4, is based on a book by Christopher Hitchens.
"The idea behind including this film is to show people the various
aspects of Mother Teresa and to be objective in our festival presentation,"
said Father Paul. "Mother has served humanity like nobody has and her
virtues outweigh her alleged weaknesses by far." For more information,

Pope Says Our Lady of Mount Carmel Is Source of Hope
Recalls a Church Feast Full of Memories of His Youth

On a day the Church was celebrating the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel, John Paul II presented Mary as a reason for hope and consolation.
After greeting the Carmelites who were among the 2,000 faithful gathered for
today's general audience at the papal summer residence here, the Pope
highlighted the meaning of the day, which for him brought back memories.
"Today is the liturgical memory of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel," he said
in Polish at the end of the audience. "This memory is especially dear to
all those who are devoted to Our Lady of Mount Carmel."
"Even I, from my youngest days, have worn around my neck the scapular of
Our Lady and I take refuge with trust under the mantle of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, Mother of Jesus," the Pope said.
He added: "I hope the scapular will be for everyone, especially the

The Carmel scapular wasn't the extent of Karol Wojtyla's connection with its
spirituality. He gave serious thought to entering the Carmel, after reading the
works of St. John of the Cross. The Spanish saint's mystical writings so moved
the future Pope that he based his doctoral thesis in theology on them.
Simon Stock, general superior of the Carmelite Order, received the scapular
in 1251, during an apparition of the Virgin, when she promised special
assistance in life and in death to all those who wear it with devotion.
Commenting on the Holy Father's words, theologian and Mariologist Father
Stefano De Fiores explained on Vatican Radio: "When we think of the Virgin
of Carmel today, we think first of all of the contemplation so necessary for the
world of today which is too absorbed in activity and subjected to stress and
anxiety."
"At the same time, in Mary we also see beauty," said Father De
Fiores, a Montfort Missionary. "This way of beauty today is particularly
adapted to attract the hearts of men. According to Fyodor M. Dostoyevsky, beauty
will save the world. However, not any beauty but redeemed beauty, as Pavel
Evdokimov emphasizes."
With her beauty, Mary indicates to us "what we should be and,
unfortunately, are not," the theologian added.
