Albert Gleizes (French 1881-1953) Gleizes was a cubist who after a conversion experience around 1917 wished to bring that twentieth-century art form to the service of the Church. Created during the last years of his life, the fifty-seven etchings for the Thoughts of Pascal are less cubist and more stark than is typical of his work. Gleizes labored to create a community of Christian artists at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence but his efforts failed. His work was seen as too austere even for the priests. |
