Changes in Chautauqua for 2008

The National Science Foundation has not funded any of the Chautauqua Short Course Centers for 2008.  Several centers including the University of Dayton Center will offer a limited number of courses.  The fee structure must cover all expenses including some items previously subsidized.  While expenses vary from course to course, they may include course director stipend and travel, handout preparation, facilities, participant refreshments, field trip van rental, insurance and gas, admissions to sites and office expenses. Each course will have an application fee and a course fee. Faculty may submit an application for a Dayton course on line on this site and then send a check by regular mail for the application fee. The application fee is $100, or $50 if submitted prior to February 29, 2008. The check should be made out to "Chautauqua Program" and mailed to

At Dayton we expect to make appointments in early March and at that time request payment of the course fee, which varies by course. The course fee is given in each course description on this site. At the Dayton Center we typically identify some lower cost optional lodging for participants. Details are given with appointments.

Early application is encouraged. We will make decisions on whether or not a course will run based on the number of applicants. We expect to make these decisions in late February. Thus early applications increase the likelihood that a given course will be offered. Also applicants are urged to request their institutional financial support for the course immediately. In most institutions the chances of funding are greater early in the academic year.
