Oct 29, 2007 This past weekend the Flyers competed in the Great Lakes Conference Championships at Notre Dame.  The team was going into the weekend short handed with just two substitutes in a large 30 meter pool.  In the first game against the University of Chicago the Flyers got out to an early 4-1 lead after the first quarter and were able to cruise to a 13-6 victory ensuring a spot in the semi-finals.  The Flyers were led in scoring by Brendan Blume with 4 goals and Lance Takanaka and Ben Beachler with 3 goals apiece.  Also scoring for the Flyers were Chris Del Campo, Chris Daues, and Mark Abram with one goal apiece.  Mark Laubie had 7 saves in the goal to help the Flyers earn the victory.  Even with the victory the Flyers had a set back with a shoulder injury to Mark Abram that depleted the already small Flyer bench to only one substitute.

With a spot in the semi-finals secure and a bench of just one substitute the Flyers were looking to play Grand Valley and see what type of game they could give them.  The Flyers came out flat from the starting whistle, getting down early and not being able to keep up with a team that could send in lots of substitutes and keep players fresh leading to a Grand Valley 14-4 victory. The Flyers points were put up by Lance Tanaka with 2 and Scott Hofmeister and Brendan Blume with one apiece. The loss meant the Flyers were the second seed in their bracket and would play Notre Dame Sunday morning.

The semi-final game at Notre Dame was one the players were looking forward to.  The Flyers however did not get out to a good start.  Getting down early and allowing some easy fast break goals in the Flyers got down early 5-1 after the first quarter.  The Flyers then slowly started working their way back into the contest however the big first quarter by Notre Dame and only one substitute was to much for the Flyers to overcome and the Flyers fell to the Fighting Irish 9-6.  The Flyers scores were posted by three players, Scott Hofmeister, Brendan Blume and Lance Takanaka all with two goals.

After the loss to Notre Dame the University of Dayton was going to play Ohio University for the third place adn the third time this season and were looking to avenge two one point losses.  The Flyers again got off to a slow start and scoring only one first half goal while giving up seven.  The long weekend and short bench finally caught up with the Flyers as they were unable to mount another comeback and fell Ohio University 13-7.  The goal scorers again for the Flyers were Scott Hofmeister and Lance Takanaka with three apiece and Brendan Blume with one. With the loss the Flyers ended the year in the fourth position in the Great Lakes Division.

With a short bench, the minimum rest between games and a weekend when the shooting percentage was bad, just twenty nine percent, the weekend may have not been how the Flyers wanted it to end, however the players can all take away the fact that they only got better as a group throughout the year.  This will end the Flyer careers for four players as they graduate and move onto other opportunities, these players are Chris Del Campo-Hartman, Ken Huber, Mike Melzak, and Mark Laubie.  These four have been a tremendous asset to the Flyer program this year and in the past and we wish them all the best in their future opportunities.

The Flyers took a lot from this weekend and realized that with some more players that this is a team that can compete with any team in the country and are already looking forward to the start of next year.

Oct 8, 2007 This weekend the flyers participated in the CWPA Great Lakes Division Seeding Tournament at the University of Dayton.  The Flyers had mixed results against the competition.  In the first game of three games on Saturday the Flyers came out a bit flat and allowed Nationally Ranked Grand Valley State get out to a lead that they were not able to come back from in an 18-10 loss.  The Flyers were led in scoring by Mark Abram (St. Louis, MO) and Matt Patterson (Chicago, IL) with 2 goals each.  Other scorers for the Flyers included Chris Del Campo, Brendan Blume, Mike Melzak, Scott Hofmeister, Lance Takanaka, and Ben Beachler.  The second game on Saturday saw the Flyers defeat the University of Chicago 18-2.  The Flyers got out to a large lead and were able to build on the lead and into their first win of the weekend.  The Flyers were led by Mark Laubie in the goal with 7 saves in a terrific effort battling the sun and the great shooters of Chicago.  Dayton was again led by Mark Abrams with four goals.  Brendan Blume, Lance Takanaka, and Ben Beachler each had three goals for the Flyers, while Chris Daues had two goals, and Mike Melzak, Ken Huber and Matt Patterson each had one goal for the Flyers.  The final game of the day saw Dayton play Ball State.  In a game that at times was physical the Flyers pulled away to a 26-6 victory.  The Flyers were able to freely substitute and get everyone lots of playing time as well.  The Flyers had another good performance from everyone in the field and goalie Mark Laubie.  The Flyers were led by Brendan Blume with 8 goals and Lance Takanaka with 7 goals.  The Flyers also had contributions from Mike Melzak (3 goals), Ken Huber (3 goals), Ben Beachler (3goals) and Matt Patterson with 2 goals.

Sunday the Flyers played Ohio University.  The Flyers were looking to avenge an earlier 13-12 loss at the Flyer Invitational.  This game was back and forth the whole game.  The Flyers and Bobcats battled all throughout the game.  At the end of the third period the Flyers got down 7-11.  The Flyers climbed back into the game and with a minute left were able to get down 10-11.  However, a few missed opportunities sealed the fate of the Flyers as they again fell to the Bobcats 10-11.  The Flyers again were led by Brendan Blume with 4 goals while Lance Takanaka had two and Mike Melzak, Scott Hofmeister, Mark Abram, and Matt Patterson each had one.

The Flyers want to thank everyone who came out and supported them this past weekend and look forward to the Conference Championship at Notre Dame in a couple of weeks.
